Government Assistance For Low Income Single Mothers
Between diapering, chauffeuring and putting meals together, you may feel like you'll never get a moment to find the financial help you need. Not only is help available to you as a single mother, but it's easier than ever to qualify and apply. You can apply for some programs online, and once you qualify for certain types of assistance, your application for other types may be sent automatically.
Visit the Social Security Administration website to apply for federal assistance, if you're disabled. If a permanent disability makes it difficult or impossible for you to work, you may qualify for both Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Begin your application for SSDI by clicking the "Disability" tab and click "Apply for Disability." To apply for SSI, visit your local Social Security Office.
Call or visit your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office to apply for Medicaid, the government's health insurance program for low-income people. Visit the Social Security Office Locator web page on the SSA website to find your local office. Often, if you qualify for Medicaid, the government will automatically submit applications for you for other income-related benefits.
Apply for nutritional assistance through Women, Infants and Children (WIC). WIC provides food and referrals to other welfare services for low-income pregnant women, breast-feeding women (up to your infant's first year) and children under 5 years old. Find the phone number for your state's WIC agency on the WIC toll-free phone numbers web page of the Food and Nutrition Services website.
Fill out the questionnaire on Benefits.gov to find any other government benefits for which you might qualify. You may also qualify for inexpensive child care, education and student loans, disaster relief or other forms of aid relevant to your specific situation. The questionnaire will ask personal questions about your work, income, living situation, education and health. Your results won't be stored on the website, so write them down elsewhere to apply for them later.
